COVID-19 Decals Available for For-Hire Boating Industry
New York Sea Grant (NYSG) is providing New York State’s freshwater marine industry for-hire boating sector with a series of decals to encourage public compliance with boating-specific COVID-19 safety precautions as part of the 2020 edition of NYSG’s nationally-recognized Discover Clean and Safe Boating campaign.
The decals will adhere to boat surfaces to note “Mask Required,” “Use Sanitizer,” “Wear It” with a life jacket symbol, and ”Keep Personal Belongings Personal”; others have a blank line to write a name with an erasable marker to designate person-specific areas aboard the vessel for each individual’s fishing pole or diving gear. There is no cost for the decals to qualified for-hire boating businesses.
The captains or business owners of charter services, boat rentals, tour boats, and boats for-hire for leisure cruising, fishing or diving in New York State may request decals by emailing business name, postal address, and telephone number to sgoswego@cornell.edu. Details will be returned on the number of each style of decal available while supplies last.

Program Initiatives
The "Discover Clean & Safe Boating” project successfully debuted at the Boating Industries Association (BIA) of Upstate New York show in 2008. It has since become a model industry- partnered educational effort that has expanded from Great Lakes’ venues to sites statewide. The Discover Clean & Safe Boating vessels, provided by NYS manufacturers and local dealers, are equipped with all the legally-required and recommended equipment. This program effort is a partnership between NY Sea Grant, the Boating Industries Association of Upstate NY (BIA), and local/regional marine dealers and manufacturers.
“Discover Better Boating” is a monthly television news series airing from May-October on Spectrum News where boating industry professionals offer information and tips on such topics as preparing your boat for the boating season, boating safety, the impact of ethanol fuel on your boat, and getting better gas efficiency in a tight economy. This television outreach effort is a partnership of New York Sea Grant, the Boating Industries Association of Upstate New York (BIA), and Spectrum News.
The Great Lakes Research Consortium is an organization of 18 colleges and universities in New York State with nine affiliate campuses in Ontario, Canada, dedicated to collaborative Great Lakes research and science education.
The Great Lakes Research Consortium, hosted at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, Syracuse, NY, administers the New York State Great Lakes Protection Fund small grants program.
The annual Path Through Maritime History exhibit at the Great New York State Fair endeavors to educate fair-goers about the maritime history, heritage, and culture of New York State. In the past, visitors have been introduced to the Great Shipwrecks of New York's Great Lakes which explored the historic, cultural and preservation efforts occurring underneath the inland waterways of New York, Waterways of War demonstrated the role of New York State's maritime geography in three early American military conflicts and, Lighthouses and Life-Saving focused on the historic and economic significance of lighthouses, their keepers, and their technology.
Creating the Path Through Maritime History exhibit year-after-year is one centered on strong collaborative partnerships among dozens of organizations and individual contributors.
Now, you too can travel the Path Through Maritime History and enjoy learning about the shipwrecks, waterways or war, and lighthouses that have shaped New York's Maritime History.
The Oneida Lake Education Initiative was developed to provide scientifically based information on Oneida Lake and its watershed to enhance our understanding of this superb water resource. The website provides information and material to enjoy the resources provided by the lake in an environmentally sound manner.
The Oneida Lake Education Initiative is funded and supported by a host of local, state, and federal partners as part of the Oneida Lake Watershed Management Program including NY Sea Grant, and is maintained by the Cornell University Biological Field Station at Shackelton Point for our benefit and use.
