Stony Brook, NY, September 5, 2012 - New York Sea Grant's popular publication Long Island's Dynamic South Shore: A Primer on the Forces and Trends Shaping Our Coast (pdf) has been revised and reprinted. Authored by Sea Grant's coastal processes specialist Jay Tanski, this 28-page illustrated booklet provides an overview of what we know about coastal processes and erosion on Long Island's south shore, based on the best available scientific information. It includes a description of physical characteristics, geology, use and development of the 120-mile coast stretching between Coney Island and Montauk.
How the shoreline has changes day to day, year to year and over thousands of years and the forces responsible for those changes are explored. Topics such barrier island migration, sea level rise (past present and future), the effects of storms, the impact of human activities on the shore are also covered.
Information is presented in an easy to understand format using 31 illustrations that will familiarize the reader with shoreline behavior and technical issues associated with erosion and erosion management on Long Island's south shore.
