New York City and Westchester County communities are now assisted by New York Sea Grant’s new Long Island Sound Study Outreach Coordinator.

Queens, NY, August 10, 2022 - The Long Island Sound Study (LISS), an EPA-led partner and cooperative effort involving researchers, regulators, user groups, and others, is experiencing rapid expansion. With support from New York Sea Grant (NYSG), LISS helps to implement actions, objectives, and goals focused on clean waters and healthy watersheds, thriving habitats and abundant wildlife, sustainable and resilient communities, sound science and inclusive management, as well as resilience to climate change, long-term sustainability, and environmental justice.

In October of 2021, NYSG established and filled a new LISS Outreach Coordinator’s position to assist the New York City and Westchester County communities along Long Island Sound. This is the first time such a role has been dedicated to these two areas of the Sound.

This new position is immediately tasked with addressing climate change resiliency and expanding community engagement. With matching funds from the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYC DEP), the new coordinator is engaging the public in understanding the importance of resilient coastlines, the impacts of climate change, long-term sustainability, pollution remediation, and environmental justice. The LISS Outreach Coordinator for NYC and Westchester County is based at the NYC DEP office in Queens. 

This new LISS Coordinator position compliments a similar role focused on Long Island’s Nassau and Suffolk counties. Learn more at www.longislandsoundstudy.net.

New York Sea Grant (NYSG), a cooperative program of Cornell University and the State University of New York (SUNY), is one of 34 university-based programs under the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Sea Grant College Program.

Since 1971, NYSG has represented a statewide network of integrated research, education and extension services promoting coastal community economic vitality, environmental sustainability and citizen awareness and understanding about the State’s marine and Great Lakes resources.
